HOW DO WE THRIVE UNDER FIRE DURING THE PANDEMIC?
LIANZA is delighted with partner with TUF to offer online professional development and coaching.

Problem One:
There is an increase in stress and anxiety within our communities because of COVID-19, especially now we have the highly contagious Omicron variant. Scanning, vaccine mandates and mask requirements are excluding some people from previously accessible venues. This stress is leading to more verbal aggression and physical threats from library users.

  • How do you deal with other people who show signs of emotional distress through anxious, unreasonable, and aggressive behaviour?
  • How do you deal with your own reactions after an incident and the anxiety about these things happening again?

Problem Two:
Training to manage verbal aggression and physical threats is an urgent health and safety need.

Yet, face-to-face training is not advised at this time because of the highly contagious nature of the virus. Plus, libraries and information services may be working on reduced staff numbers because of colleagues needing to self-isolate.

  • How do you provide training for those who at work without taking too much time?

Problem Three:
Of the colleagues needing to self-isolate only a small number will show symptoms. The majority will either recover quickly, have only minor symptoms or simply be close contacts of others who have caught the virus.

  • What do you do while at home if you cannot engage in frontline work activities?

People isolating could well be experiencing distressing emotional states such as loneliness, anxiety, depression, or general lethargy. Most will be languishing, not many are likely to be thriving.

  • What meaningful training support would best support those self-isolating?
  • What professional development could be offered during this time?

This course is by far the best de-escalation course I have seen – my congratulations to the people who put this together  - it needs to be compulsory – with regular updates.
