Want to explore what the interface between public libraries and sex, sexuality and gender identity is, and what it could be? Of course Library collections are full of education, edu-tainment and entertainment relating to sex and sexuality, but as organisations, are we the safe places we like to think of ourselves as? Could we do better?

Do you identify as part of the library LGBTQIA community, or are you ally? Are you an agitator, an advocate for professional practice which evolves in line with the communities we serve? Then you are probably part of my tribe.

BUT - if you are confused by all the fuss being made about ‘Diversity and Inclusion’, and struggle with words like genderfluid or woke I would like to share my presentation with you too, and have a discussion afterwards!

About Siren Deluxe

Siren has been working for only a short time as Team Leader at Paraparaumu library on the Kapiti Coast. Most of their career has been spent in the museum sector and the art world, but they are all part of the same cultural sector family, they share many of the same values and aspirations. One of these is to be exemplary in the area of diversity and inclusion.

Siren worked at Auckland War Memorial Museum for eight years during a time when the museum was challenged to become a visible advocate of the Rainbow Community. The Museum answered the challenge by working towards a Rainbow Tick certification, challenging unconscious bias institution-wide, implemented new policy and thus high level accountability, and offering a an interpretation of the galleries through a Queer lens.
